What is SEO & AEO?
SEO helps search engines find and rank your pages. AEO helps answer engines understand and cite them. Here is why businesses now need both.
By Chase Burr
Search used to mean typing a phrase into Google and choosing a blue link. That still matters, but it is no longer the whole journey. People also ask Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Copilot, and other answer engines to compare options, explain a problem, or recommend a business.
That gives a modern website two jobs: earn a place in search results and become a trustworthy source for generated answers. SEO and AEO describe those jobs.
What is SEO?
SEO — search engine optimization — helps search engines discover, understand, and rank your pages. Google describes it as making content easier for search engines to understand and helping people decide whether to visit your site.
Good SEO starts with fundamentals:
- Pages that crawlers can access and index
- Clear titles, headings, and internal links
- Useful content written for a specific customer need
- Fast, accessible pages that work well on mobile
- Accurate business information and descriptive structured data
SEO is important because a strong page can meet a potential customer at the moment they are actively looking for an answer, service, or product. It creates discoverability where demand already exists.
What is AEO?
AEO — answer engine optimization — helps systems extract, trust, and cite the right information from your content when they build an answer. The goal is not only to rank a page. It is to make your expertise usable when an AI system summarizes a topic, compares providers, or responds to a detailed question.
AEO is sometimes discussed as if it requires a completely new playbook. It does not. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features and that there is no special AI schema required. OpenAI likewise says public pages can appear in ChatGPT search when its search crawler can access them.
The difference is emphasis. A page prepared for answer engines makes its facts easy to retrieve:
- It answers the main question early and directly
- It uses specific headings instead of vague marketing language
- It supports claims with examples, evidence, and first-hand experience
- It keeps prices, services, locations, and policies consistent and current
- It separates topics clearly enough that a passage makes sense when cited
SEO earns the visit. AEO earns the citation.
That shorthand is useful, but the two overlap. An answer engine still needs to find and understand a page before it can cite it. Google requires pages used in AI Overviews and AI Mode to be indexed and eligible for ordinary search. Microsoft now reports citations from AI answers inside Bing Webmaster Tools, alongside traditional crawl and search data.
For a business, this matters because visibility can happen before a person reaches the website. A customer may first encounter your name inside a summary or comparison, then visit when they are ready to verify the details or take action. If your site is absent, unclear, or generic, the answer engine has little reason to include it.
What should you do first?
Do not split SEO and AEO into separate content projects. Build one reliable source of truth.
- Make sure search and answer crawlers can reach your important public pages.
- Give every core service its own page with a plain explanation of who it is for, what it includes, and what makes your approach credible.
- Turn real customer questions into concise headings and direct answers.
- Add structured data that matches what visitors can actually see.
- Publish evidence only your business can provide: process details, examples, original observations, and measurable results.
- Measure both outcomes — search impressions and clicks, plus citations and referral traffic from answer platforms where those reports are available.
The durable strategy is simple: make your website easy to crawl, easy to understand, and worth citing. That is good SEO, good AEO, and a better experience for the person asking the question.
