A small-business guide to being found in AI search
Search is splitting between engines and answer machines. Structured data and clear pages win in both worlds — here is where to start.
By Chase Burr
Search is splitting in two. There are still engines — Google, Bing — ranking pages by links and relevance. And now there are answer machines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, which read the web and answer the customer directly. Your next customer may never see a results page at all. They will see a paragraph, and either your business is in it or it is not.
The good news: the same work wins in both worlds. Here is where to start.
Answer machines quote pages that answer
AI search does not reward cleverness. It rewards pages that state facts plainly: what you do, who it is for, what it costs, where you are. If your pricing lives in a PDF and your services page says "solutions for your journey," there is nothing quotable to cite.
Rewrite your core pages so every important question a customer asks has a sentence that answers it directly. One question, one plain answer, close to the top. The paragraph you would want an AI to read aloud — write that paragraph.
Structured data is how machines read you
Schema.org markup (JSON-LD) is a label on your content that machines parse without guessing: this is a business, here are its hours, this is a product and its price, these are FAQs. Engines have used it for years; answer machines lean on it harder.
The minimum set for a small business:
- Organization / LocalBusiness — name, logo, contact, service area
- Service or Product — with real prices when you can commit to them
- FAQPage — your actual frequently asked questions, verbatim
- Article — for every post you publish
Be the source, not the echo
Answer machines prefer sources that demonstrate first-hand knowledge — the plumber who explains the actual failure mode, the studio that publishes its real process and numbers. Generic content written to fill a page is invisible now; the machines have read a million versions of it.
Write what only you know: your process, your prices, your before-and-afters, the questions customers ask you on the phone. One honest page like that outperforms twenty "10 tips" posts.
The checklist
- Every service has its own page with a plain-language description and a price or price range.
- JSON-LD on every page: organization, services, FAQs, articles.
- Your Google Business Profile matches your site exactly — name, hours, categories.
- Pages load fast and render without JavaScript acrobatics — crawlers are impatient.
- Publish first-hand answers to real customer questions, and date them.
None of this is a trick, which is exactly why it keeps working. You are making the site easier to read for machines whose job is to recommend someone. Make it undeniable that the someone should be you.

Core Web Vitals: what actually moves the needle
Most performance advice optimizes the wrong thing. Three metrics decide how fast your site feels — and two fixes cover most of the gap.
